October 5th 2004 Nationwide Tour Field Trip We had a great time! We all met at "will call" at 8:45 am on Tuesday, with water in hand and excitement in the air. Our small group of eight had golf tournament experience ranging from never attending a professional golf tournament to a Dad who had actually caddied in an event. We began our tour by heading to the driving range. Many of the players were warming up or practicing as Tuesday is a practice round day. After watching how easy they make it look, we went to one of my favorite places, the PGA Tour technical van to observe the players, their caddies and club repair technicians buzzing in and out, tinkering, building and fixing clubs. Each of us was able to enter the van to see up close how cool all of the machines are and how fast they can fix clubs. This adventure raised several questions about equipment, player's sponsorship agreements, and how much money players on each of the tours are making. Our next appointment was with three gentleman who were not players, caddies or officials. Two of these men were agents / player managers and the third was a representative for a major manufacturer. During their presentations to us about what they do and why they are here, we learned about the manager's primary role of "getting more money for our players." Also we spoke with the manufacturer rep who informed us that his reason for being there was to "support our players," "talk with managers," and to be available to any other player who is interested to try their product. We also learned that there is a big difference between the equipment that the tour player uses verses the equipment that we buy from the store. After answering a few more questions, I presented to the group my vision for the Advanced Squad. As home schooler's who have a passion or even a general interest in golf come forward, I will have a place for them. From PEE WEE to Advanced squad. The vision for the Advanced Squad is that home schooler's will have a team to participate on so that they can continue to home school through high school and compete in golf at the same time. Thank you very much to the families that were able to attend and to the families that were unable to attend but are supporting home school golf. Please contact me with any questions that you may have. We are taking baby steps and our goal is to be flexible and fair to all. Craig Hocknull, PGA 602-561-4653 info@homeschoolgolf.com |
